When you're next sat on Bath Road, trying to get through Radstocks daily traffic jam from hell, consider how some people solve their problems.

Imagine a Radstock where 'planners', - having already allowed hundreds of new homes, - and now busily contemplating thousands more, spent just a little time reflecting on the need of their inhabitants to travel to and from work, as well as in pursuit of leisure activities, which are sadly lacking locally.

Imagine a Radstock bypassed by a fly-over from Clandown corner to Westfield.
Imagine a Radstock bypassed by a new cut road from Terry's Cross to Farrington Gurney.
Imagine a Radstock with only local traffic to contemplate.

Imagine a Radstock with a working steam railway link to Frome, - imagine the benefits to the local economy as people flock from wide and far to catch a ride.
Imagine a Radstock with new business and industry opening up, offering many and varied local job and career opportunities for local people, because of it's excellent traffic links to the outside world.

. . . . yeah, imagine!

About the Midsomer Norton and Radstock Area

You'll find Midsomer Norton and Radstock 10 miles south of Bath, about a mile apart. Although very different in character and origin, the towns are usually referred to under the one embracing label, - as "Norton Radstock".

Radstock
Radstock is a former mining and railway town located on the old Roman 'Fosse Way'. Once the powerhouse for Bath, Radstock has some unique architecture associated with its mining and Victorian heritage. Radstock has been described as the best preserved former mining town in the country, and may soon become a conser- vation area. Independent retailers in the town offer a range of food, retail and service outlets, and are mostly based in The Street, Fortescue Road and Wells Hill. The former market hall on Waterloo Road now houses the Radstock Museum showing many aspects of local life in bygone times, and in 1997 celebrated its centenary along with the Victoria Hall, - now the Home of Norton Radstock Town Council.

Midsomer Norton
Midsomer Norton is an old market town dating back to Mediaeval times, with a river running down the High Street, one of the oldest houses in the area (the Old Priory Hotel & Restaurant) , and a 15th Century Tithe Barn, which now is home to the Catholic Church. Many independent retailers and businesses allows Midsomer Norton town centre to retain the character and old fashioned charm not often found in today's High Streets.
Wander through the town, - from the Old Priory to the Stones Cross, watch the ducks on the river and most of all, - enjoy a warm Somerset welcome.

. . . Radstock in history

Radstock has a history that goes back to before Roman times when it was an Iron Age settlement sitting in a valley at the confluence of three streams. When the Romans came, Radstock became a significant place on the Fosseway, the great Roman military road to Bath. But Radstock's importance was not to become apparent until the Industrial Revolution when the new industries demanded coal and coke and these materials had to be transported from source to destination; and Radstock's importance? It was sitting right over the Somerset coalfield. The Great Western Railway and the Somerset and Dorset Railway both established stations and marshalling yards at Radstock and a wagon works located itself right beside Radstock Pit, on the way to Writhlington. Coking ovens were established in Coombend, which provided the town with gas and the steel works in the Midlands with coke.
The town flourished and its success is seen in the buildings: The Radstock Hotel, The Bell Hotel, the Market Hall (now a museum), Victoria Hall and the Post Office building and, for those who keep their eyes open, there are many more examples of architecture influenced by the developing wealth of Radstock's businesses. A visit to the Museum in the old Market Hall will add so much more about Radstock's past that it should be on the 'unmissable' list of any visitor.

Around and about Radstock you will find a feast of fascinating trivia. Little Jack Horner of nursery rhyme fame - you know the one, 'he stuck in his thumb and pulled out a plum' - lived at Mells Manor a short drive from Radstock. A visit to the Talbot Hotel there will tell you more.

Remember Jack & Jill who fell down the hill? Well they lived in Kilmersdon, a village that is on the route to Mells and the well that they visited is still there for you to see, at the top of the hill, by the school.

When bubonic plague, which was known as The Black Death, struck in the 14th Century it is thought that over a third of the population of England was killed by the disease. People at the time knew very little, if anything, about controlling the disease, but at Holcombe village, to the south of Radstock, the remaining villagers abandoned their homes in the valley and re-established the village at the top of the hill in the hope that this would stop the pestilence.
The local restaurant pub called "The Ring o' Roses" commemorates this time in the village's history in its name.
